Pench Tree Lodge

3 Days

Pench Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh — 2 Nights, 4 Safaris | Handcrafted for Wildlife Adventurers

Pench Tiger Reserve, straddling the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, is a forest of remarkable intimacy and diversity. Famously the inspiration for Kipling's Jungle Book — the village of Seeonee is just kilometres away — Pench is characterised by teak forest, open meadows, and the meandering Pench River, whose banks serve as a corridor for an extraordinary array of wildlife. The reserve is notably less crowded than its more famous neighbours Kanha and Bandhavgarh, which means your safari experience here tends to feel more personal and unscripted — the kind of encounter that feels genuinely wild rather than performed.

June brings Pench to a particularly vivid state. The Pench River is swelling with pre-monsoon rains, the teak canopy is achieving its full green density, and wildlife activity along the river and its associated water holes is at its most concentrated. Wild dogs (dholes), tigers, leopards, sambar, and gaur are all regularly encountered in this season, alongside an extraordinary richness of resident and migratory birds. Pench Tree Lodge is a sustainably run property set in a teak grove, offering tree-house accommodation, excellent naturalist services, and a genuine eco-philosophy that makes every aspect of the stay feel connected to the forest around it.

Suggested Resorts:
• Pench Tree Lodge — Award-winning eco-lodge with tree-house cottages, expert naturalists, and a conservation-first ethos.
• Jamtara Wilderness Camp (Upgrade) — Intimate luxury camp on the Pench River with exclusive zone access and exceptional guiding.
• Pench Jungle Camp (Value Option) — Good-value property with comfortable rooms and dependable safari operations.

TRIPGULLAK was founded by wildlife enthusiasts who believe that a true jungle experience goes far beyond just spotting a tiger. From the moment you book, you are assigned a dedicated WhatsApp coordinator who remains your single point of contact throughout the journey — answering queries at odd hours, sharing pre-trip briefings, and troubleshooting any last-minute changes. Our deep relationships with lodge managers, naturalists, and forest department staff translate into inside knowledge: the best zones to request, the right gypsy drivers who know the terrain, and timing tips that most tourists never get.

We specialise in small-group and private wildlife trips across Central and Northern India, which means every itinerary we design is treated as a bespoke experience rather than a catalogue booking. Whether you are a seasoned birder wanting a specific zone allocation, a couple seeking a romantic eco-retreat, or a family introducing children to the wild for the first time, TRIPGULLAK customises the details that matter — meal preferences, room categories, safari timing, and optional nature walks — so that your experience reflects exactly who you are as a traveller.

Pench is open from October 15 to June 30. The park is considered by many wildlife photographers to be at its finest from February to May, when the vegetation is at its thinnest and animal movements are most predictable. June offers a dramatically different experience: the forest is green and lush, the river is flowing beautifully, and the visitor numbers are at their lowest. Both seasons have their advocates. Pench in winter is all golden light and crisp mornings; Pench in June is verdant and intimate. Either way, this reserve consistently rewards.

What to Pack

Lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing — teak forest tracks can be dusty or muddy in June | Waterproof jacket or poncho — essential in June as pre-monsoon showers arrive without much warning | Waterproof cover for camera equipment | Comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for forest trails | Binoculars — Pench has exceptional bird diversity (over 285 species recorded) | Telephoto camera lens for wildlife photography from the gypsy | Insect repellent for evenings (mosquitoes increase with the first rains) | Sunscreen and sunglasses | Reusable water bottle and electrolyte sachets | Small dry bag for electronics during rainy weather

Why Visit Pench Tiger Reserve?

Pench Tiger Reserve offers a distinctive wildlife experience compared with some of India's more heavily visited tiger reserves.

The reserve stretches across the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and is characterized by teak forests, open meadows and the Pench River.

Its varied landscape supports an impressive range of wildlife, including tigers, leopards, wild dogs, sambar, gaur and numerous bird species.

One of the attractions of Pench is the feeling of being immersed in a relatively intimate forest environment.

Instead of simply searching for a particular animal, a safari here is an opportunity to observe the complete ecosystem — from alarm calls and animal tracks to birds moving through the canopy and wildlife gathering around water sources.

Pench and The Jungle Book

Pench has a unique connection to one of the world's most famous wildlife stories.

The region around Seoni is associated with Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, making a visit to Pench particularly interesting for travellers who grew up with stories of Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo and the Indian jungle.

While the real Pench forest is very different from a fictional story, the teak woodland, rivers, animals and landscapes provide an interesting connection between literature and the natural world.

Day 1: Arrival at Pench & Afternoon Buffer Safari

Your Pench adventure begins with your arrival at Pench Tree Lodge.

The property is set within a teak grove and offers tree-house-style accommodation designed to make guests feel connected to the surrounding forest.

After check-in, settle into your accommodation and enjoy lunch in the open-air dining environment.

Before the first safari, your naturalist will introduce you to Pench's landscape and provide a briefing about the forest and current wildlife activity.

Afternoon Buffer Safari

Later in the afternoon, head into the Pench buffer zone for your first jungle safari.

The buffer area provides an opportunity to explore a quieter part of the forest while looking for wildlife and observing the area's rich birdlife.

Pench is particularly known for wild dog, or dhole, sightings, and the buffer-zone experience can provide opportunities to observe these fascinating predators along with other forest species.

As the afternoon progresses and the temperature begins to fall, the forest changes character.

Listen for alarm calls, watch the forest edges and keep your camera ready.

Return to Pench Tree Lodge after the safari and enjoy the evening at the property.

An evening bonfire may be arranged depending on weather conditions and resort policy.

Overnight stay: Pench Tree Lodge.

Day 2: Morning & Evening Core Zone Safaris

Day two is dedicated to exploring the core zone of Pench Tiger Reserve.

Morning Core Zone Safari

Start your day early with a morning safari.

The cooler morning hours can provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, while the soft morning light is particularly attractive for photographers.

Your naturalist can help interpret animal tracks, calls and other signs of wildlife activity.

As the safari progresses through the teak forest and open areas, keep an eye out for movement around water sources and forest clearings.

Pench is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, so every safari can reveal something different.

Midday Break

Return to the lodge after your morning safari and enjoy your meals.

The middle of the day is an opportunity to rest and recharge before heading back into the forest.

Evening Core Zone Safari

Later in the afternoon, embark on your second safari of the day.

The evening forest offers a completely different atmosphere from the morning.

Changing light, cooler temperatures and shifting wildlife activity can create new opportunities even when travelling through familiar landscapes.

Your naturalist will help you understand the forest and maximize your chances of observing wildlife while maintaining responsible safari practices.

Return to Pench Tree Lodge after the safari.

Overnight stay: Pench Tree Lodge.

Day 3: Final Morning Safari & Farewell

Your final morning begins with another jungle safari.

This is your fourth and final opportunity to explore the reserve during the trip.

Early morning can be one of the most atmospheric times to experience the forest.

The combination of cool air, soft light and bird calls creates a memorable final safari.

After returning to the lodge, enjoy breakfast and prepare for departure.

Your Pench wildlife adventure comes to an end, leaving you with memories of forest trails, wildlife encounters and time spent surrounded by the teak landscape.

Four Safaris Across Three Days

One of the biggest advantages of this Pench itinerary is the number of safari experiences included.

The schedule includes:

Day 1

  • Afternoon buffer-zone safari

Day 2

  • Morning core-zone safari

  • Evening core-zone safari

Day 3

  • Final morning safari

That means travellers have four separate opportunities to explore Pench Tiger Reserve during the 3-day trip.

Multiple safari drives are particularly useful because wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Each safari takes place under different conditions, with changing temperatures, light, animal movement and forest activity.

Stay at Pench Tree Lodge

The itinerary includes accommodation at Pench Tree Lodge, an eco-focused property located within a teak grove.

The lodge's tree-house-style accommodation gives travellers a distinctive way to experience the forest.

Rather than simply using the accommodation as a base between safari drives, the property itself becomes part of the wildlife experience.

The lodge emphasizes sustainability, nature and conservation, making it a natural fit for a Pench wildlife holiday.

Other Accommodation Options

The itinerary also highlights alternative properties depending on traveller preferences.

Jamtara Wilderness Camp

Jamtara Wilderness Camp is presented as an upgrade option, offering an intimate luxury camp experience close to the Pench River.

It can appeal to travellers looking for a more exclusive wildlife retreat.

Pench Jungle Camp

Pench Jungle Camp is listed as a value-oriented alternative, offering comfortable accommodation and safari operations.

These options provide flexibility for travellers with different accommodation preferences.

Best Time to Visit Pench

Pench Tiger Reserve is open for tourism from October 15 through June 30.

Different seasons offer very different wildlife experiences.

February to May – Wildlife & Photography Season

February through May is widely considered one of the strongest periods for wildlife photography.

As the dry season progresses, vegetation becomes thinner and animal movement can become easier to observe.

Water sources also become increasingly important to wildlife, potentially creating interesting viewing opportunities.

For travellers primarily interested in tiger and wildlife sightings, this period can be particularly attractive.

October to January – Pleasant Forest Experience

The cooler months offer crisp mornings, comfortable safari conditions and beautiful golden light.

The forest can appear particularly atmospheric during early morning drives.

This is a good period for travellers who prioritize comfortable weather alongside wildlife viewing.

June – Green Pench

June offers a completely different experience.

The forest becomes lush and intensely green, the Pench River is flowing strongly and visitor numbers are generally lower.

Pre-monsoon showers can bring a fresh atmosphere to the forest.

However, travellers should be prepared for rain and muddy conditions.

Packing correctly can make your safari significantly more comfortable.

Clothing

Choose lightweight clothing in neutral colours such as:

  • Khaki

  • Beige

  • Waterproof camera cover

Pre-monsoon showers can arrive unexpectedly.

Important Pench Safari Guidelines

Couples can also customize aspects of the experience, such as room preferences, meal requirements and optional nature activities.

Pench Wildlife Trip for Families

Pench offers families an opportunity to introduce children to India's wildlife and forest ecosystems.

A safari can become an educational experience, allowing children to learn about animal behaviour, birds, forests and conservation.

Families should consider children's age and comfort when planning multiple safari drives, particularly during warmer months.

Pench for Wildlife Photographers & Birdwatchers

Pench is particularly appealing to wildlife photographers and bird enthusiasts.

The reserve's diverse habitats support a wide range of wildlife, while the recorded bird diversity makes it an excellent destination for birdwatching.
